Deoksu, who had to replace his father, who was separated by the war, with five family members of Deoksu (played by Hwang Jung-min), who fled to Busan after the Korean War in 1950, makes a living by working at Kkotbun’s, an imported general store in Busan’s international market run by his aunt. At a time when everyone was in trouble, Deok-soo, who left for Germany as a miner to earn his brother’s college tuition, meets his first love and lifelong companion Young-ja (Kim Yoon-jin) there. He gave up his long dream of becoming a “captain” to protect the “Flowerbun’s” store, which has become the home of his family’s life, and once again moved to Vietnam, where the war was in full swing, to work as a technical worker… The greatest story of the most ordinary father begins at the time when he lived firmly for his family!
Plot
The first part is based on the incident of the Heungnam withdrawal operation. Yoon Deok-soo, a boy who lived happily in Heungnam, South Hamgyong Province, with his mother, father, and three younger brothers. However, the happiness ended in 1950 when the Korean Peninsula split into two Koreas and went to war. Residents of Heungnam, including Deoksu’s family, rushed to evacuate, but all the retreats were already blocked, and the only reliable retreat was the cargo ship Meredith Victory, which the U.S. troops were trying to withdraw. Major General Almond, the commander of the 10th U.S. Army, approved Hyun Bong-hak, an interpreter of the 10th U.S. Army on board, begging to save the refugees, and made a bold decision to abandon all weapons and carry the refugees. However, no matter how big the ship was, it was not enough to carry all 100,000 refugees, and refugees who could not get on the ship on time were coming up even by hanging on to a rope. Deoksu also lifted his younger sister Maksoon and grabbed the rope, and while coming up, someone reached out and grabbed Maksoon’s shoulder and pulled her, and Deoksu, who realized that it was empty after getting on the ship, immediately looked down for his younger brother, but his younger brother hid his traces. Since then, Deoksu has come with the rest of his family as a general store called “Flowerbun’s” run by his aunt living in Busan. The aunt, who lives with the drunkard, was also not in a position to take care of others, but rather than kicking out Deoksu’s sudden roll, the four family members (mother, Deoksu, youngest sister Choi Jong-soon, and younger brother Seung-gyu) even give up a room to live in. In addition, Deoksu also became friends with Dal-gu, a boy from Busan who met at a temporary tent school, and became familiar with Busan, which was unfamiliar. Decades later, Deoksu, who became a young man, was doing all sorts of bad things to feed his family, as his father said, and one day, good news flew in. Seung-gyu, who was studying hard, passed Seoul National University.However, it was almost impossible to afford the expensive college tuition at Deoksu’s expense. And there, he met Young-ja, who was working as a nurse for the miners side by side, fell in love with her, and as soon as she returned from her home country, she got married. Since then, he has passed the Korea Maritime University and thought he would walk the path of a captain, which has long been his dream, but another problem broke out. He overheard his youngest brother, Choi Jong-soon, arguing with his mother about marriage funds. In the end, Deoksu gave up his dream of becoming a captain with tears in his eyes and said he would work as an engineer in Vietnam this time.
