Hello! Today, I’m going to introduce Korea’s rainy season to international students! The rainy season is a characteristic climate phenomenon of summer weather in Korea, and refers to the weather with continuous rain. The rainy season usually runs from early June to the end of July, and can sometimes last until early August. During this time, Korea is filled with rainy days. There are times when it falls all day long for a month!

The reason of Monsoon
The start of the rainy season is when high pressure in summer and air pressure such as typhoons overlap on the Korean Peninsula. Due to the influence of water vapor and typhoons from the southern ocean, Korea continues to face humid air and cloudy skies. Due to the influence of this humid air and typhoon, it is a climate phenomenon called “rainy season” that continues to rain throughout Korea.

The impact of Monsoon
The rainy season has a big impact on the daily lives of Korean people. Outdoor activities are sometimes restricted on rainy days, and most Koreans always carry umbrellas during the rainy season. Transportation facilities such as roads and subway stations can be flooded, and sometimes disasters such as floods can occur.
In fact, in 2022, last year, the rainy season and torrential rain continued, and so much rain fell that the Gangnam area in Seoul was flooded. Due to severe casualties and property damage, we have recognized that more preparation is needed during the rainy season for safety.

El Nino phenomenon
This year’s rainy season is expected to be similar to or longer than last year. That’s because of the El Nino phenomenon. El Nino is a climate phenomenon in which sea level temperatures in the Pacific Ocean are higher than normal. This phenomenon occurs in the tropical Pacific region and affects climate change worldwide. As the rainy season is affected by hot water vapor and typhoons from the south, it cannot avoid the effects of the El Nino phenomenon. This year’s El Nino phenomenon is so severe that it is called “Super El Nino, ” so we need to prepare for the rainy season more.
